Statement of Intent

 Statement of Intent

How do you intend to use the 4 areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)

Language, representation, audience (who they are and their engagement), institution (independent)- represent multiple social groups as there's not a particular remit given by the publishing company

Product 1:

To appeal to a 16–25-year-old middle market audience which would like to be entertained, I will make sure to adhere to music magazine conventions. I will do this by featuring different music genres in my editions, as from my research, I found most music magazines complied with this convention. This will also keep the audience entertained as enigma codes (Barthes semiotics theory) of: ‘what genre will be next?’ could arise which an active audience would enjoy as can spark social interaction.

From being an independent magazine, it allows for flexibility within my editions as there isn't a specific remit to represent so therefore can have creative control over aspects such as who is represented and how. My models on the front covers will be from different ethnic groups and genders, to represent a mass demographic. Therefore, creating inclusivity for the target audience. This will be highlighted in my mese-un-scene as I will have close ups of their faces to show off their physical features, whilst in the content's pages having long shots to show off their fashion.

Also, I hope to create a strong brand identity by using 3 main fonts so that the magazine will be recognizable. The typography will have different colour schemes in each edition to create a fun, unpredictable feel to the magazine, whilst still being recognisable due to the house style being strong. The masthead ‘CRAZE’ is short yet impactful to convey the connotations of the independent music magazine being passionate about all music.

Product 2:

For my website, I aspire to create an appealing and enticing online media product that has strong synergy links to my print edition. I will incorporate exclusive elements that the print product can't achieve such as videos of behind-the-scenes footage, to attract an audience who like to be entertained. Also, to stay unique, I will include exclusive content about featured artists the print magazine doesn't cover. For example, edition 2’s artist will have a hidden hint about an upcoming documentary under a hover icon. This interactive element will encourage the audience to explore more of the website to find more easter eggs. I will incorporate an intertextual reference to Sabrina Carpenter’s hit song ‘Please Please Please which my mainstream psychographics will understand and feel flattered by to keep them invested in the magazine and website as it’s catered to the age demographic. The strong brand identity will carry on with the same fonts used but with a variety of colours to be more appealing and fun.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production (approx. 100 words)

It is essential that my magazine and website mutually promote each other. I will achieve this through several calls to action from both forms to the other, along with a strong brand identity. For example, in my content's pages of both editions, I will have a call to action to my website- one about a chance to vote for your favourite song. On the website, I will have the magazine front covers displayed on the homepage to create a strong link. I will create a strong sense of branding by having the same 3 main fonts across my website and magazine whilst having the same colour pallet form both editions featured on the website
